Albion Scaccia Gallops Toward Tight Deadline

Our contract with the Georgia State Financing and Investment Commission (GSFIC) has yielded some interesting projects throughout the state. Our newest project with them is renovating the Horse Barn on the grounds of the Georgia National Fairgrounds in Perry.

We are completely renovating the 97,750 sq. ft. space, replacing the dirt floor with concrete, replacing all the lumber in 480 stalls, pressure washing the entire building, and replacing electrical throughout. The challenge in this project is that we have to be finished by February 23, when the Georgia National Junior Livestock Show & Rodeo begins. We are working seven days a week to make that happen.

When the rodeo contestants arrive, they will be welcomed in to a newly renovated high quality livestock facility that they will be proud of.

Albion Scaccia Completes First Atlanta Metropolitan College Project

One of the reasons Atlanta Metropolitan College retained us is that we told them we could complete projects quickly and efficiently, and I’m proud to say we’ve now proved that to them.

After signing on with the college in October, we quickly completed a renovation in the school’s cash office. We demolished the existing space, which consisted of two cash windows and an office and reconfigured the office space, putting in new carpet and millwork and painting the space. We also added a third cash window that is handicap accessible, and installed roll down security doors over the windows.

This week we’re beginning another project on campus. We’ll be renovating one of the vice president’s offices, upgrading all the finishes. We look forward to continuing to improve the campus in the future.

Chuck’s Famous is Fresh from the Oven

Chuck’s Famous (formerly known as St. Charles Deli) is now open at its new location at 68 5^th Street in the Georgia Tech Technology Square area.

The project was a challenging one for us, as the restaurant is located directly below a conference room in the Georgia Tech Hotel and Conference Center, so we had strict guidelines on when we could work on the project, as well as how much noise we could make.

We were brought on early in the project, soon after the base designs were completed. We served as the design/builders for the mechanical, electrical and plumbing portions of the project and were able to identify some cost savings in those areas.

The new restaurant features sandwiches from around the country, such as New Orleans and New York City and is sure to become popular with Tech students. I recommend the Italian Beef!

Georgia State Student Center to Receive Upgrade

To heighten students’ experiences, Georgia State University has asked Albion Scaccia to upgrade and update its servery, located in the Student Center. We’re looking forward to the challenge of completely renovating the space within one month. We begin work the second week of November, and work must be completed the second week of December.

We’ll be taking out walls and installing sliding, NanaWall® systems, upgrading flooring and millwork and installing a 3Form® wing ceiling. We’ll also install new acoustical wall panels and build store fronts for some of the food serving stations.

I think the students will really appreciate the higher end finishes that will make the area a more welcoming and attractive place to meet up with their friends for a meal.

Georgia Tech Bookstore Receives Sleek Facelift

Albion Scaccia recently completed work on a new technology center for the Georgia Tech bookstore, which is run by Barnes & Noble.

We brought the technology center down to the first floor from the second floor and installed new display areas and lighting.

We also created a seating area with outlets for students to use their laptops.

The over 1,700 square foot project included light wood flooring and finishes for a modern look as well as plenty of areas for students to try out various computers, so we also had to assure plenty of access to electricity.

For this project, we served as the Construction Manager at Risk and worked with the architecture firm Wakefield Beasley.

Albion Scaccia Welcomes New Client

We’re so excited to announce Albion Scaccia has added Atlanta Metropolitan College to our select list of higher education clients.

AMC is in the initial phase of a number of renovations, and we’ll be taking care of some current projects, as well as investigating a number of projects included in the school’s master plan. We look forward to helping them reach their facilities goals.

Giving Back Is Important for Albion Scaccia

Being involved in construction for several different industries has kept our work interesting and made Albion Scaccia successful. We want our clients to know how much we appreciate their business by supporting the associations that serve their industries.

While we show our support through membership and financial sponsorships in these organizations, we also like to volunteer our time and talents. For example, our Business Development Manager, Afsaneh Abree, recently returned from the Georgia Society of Healthcare Engineers quarterly meeting in McRae, Ga. In addition to sponsoring a skeet shooting activity, Afsaneh served as the “official” photographer for the two-day meeting and will be sharing the photos she took with the attendees. She’s also planning to attend GASHE’s dinner in December.

We are also sponsors of the upcoming annual conference of the Georgia Alliance of  Community Hospitals on October 12-14 at the Ritz-Carlton Lodge at Reynolds Plantation. Continuous Improvement a Key Goal for Albion Scaccia

As Albion Scaccia grows and takes on larger and more complex projects, we want to make sure our clients continue to receive the same high level of service they expect from us, so I’ve embarked on a process to upgrade our software.

The new software we choose will ensure the accuracy of project documentation, creating a smoother project management experience for both our staff and our clients. It will also allow us to more quickly respond to client issues and concerns by better integrating all facets of a project, from new job costing and project management through accounting.

Over the last month we have reviewed several systems and are impressed with some of the newer technology that is now available.  We expect to complete our evaluations and have the final decision made in the next several weeks, so that we can be fully implemented and running by the end of this year.

This new tool, combined with our highly experienced staff, will help us continue to improve our operations so we can deliver on our promise to design innovative solutions to meet our clients’ business requirements and deliver only the highest quality of service.

Georgia Tech Dorm Renovations Yield 0% Waste

We recently renovated 55 dormitories for Georgia Tech’s North Avenue Apartments, which are the dorms that were used by Olympic athletes in 1996.

As part of the project, which entailed updating the kitchens and bathrooms, Georgia Tech asked us to recycle at least 70% of the cabinetry, sinks, faucets, drawers, pulls, etc. Using our LEED skills, we were really proud to be able to recycle 100% of all the removed material!

All the metal was recycled, and the cabinetry and countertops were broken down to be used again. The porcelain sinks will be crushed and used to make concrete. Georgia Tech loved that we were able to recycle everything, and we did, too.

The project was also challenging because we had to gut 55 kitchens and bathrooms, put in new solid surface counters with integrated sinks, cabinetry and new appliances before the students returned to school. This project really put our project management skills to the test.

We completed the demolition, cleaned up the walls, prepped the rooms, put in millwork, coordinated with plumbers to put in the faucets and with the electricians to hook up dishwashers and disposals, and we did all this in 52 working days.

The new kitchens and bathrooms look really nice, and we think the students will appreciate the changes.

Georgia State Projects Challenge, Excite Us

Georgia State University is one of our Higher Education clients, and we have been working on a variety of interesting projects for them this summer. Renovating and improving their facilities allows us to be part of the entire downtown revitalization effort, and we’re really proud to be involved in that.

We are about to finish a project on the new football practice facility. We put a new roof on the building, adding a glass clear story to allow in natural sunlight.

We’ve also been working on the university’s first permanent building, Kell Hall, which was originally a parking deck in the early 1900s. The building still has ramps going from floor to floor! Kell Hall houses offices and laboratories, and we’re putting in some new laboratory spaces for student classrooms.

One other project is in the Florence Kopleff Recital Hall. We’ve put scaffolding in the entire hall to place overhead conduits and raceways for a new audio/visual system. The challenge in this project is doing all this work without damaging the really nice theatre seating in the hall.

Working with Georgia State is always exciting, as we watch the campus grow and improve.
