Physical Description
The C-wing renovation of the Appalachian Technical College comprised of the demolition and reconfiguration of the existing machine shop, cutting areas and automotive repair center. The 12,000 square foot renovation included relocating the existing shop equipment to accommodate each phase of work while maintaining in structural classroom operations, the re-configuration of the space layout and updating all the finishes throughout the space. These shops included new supply air and fume exhaust systems, vacuum and compressed air stations, new lighting and main electrical distribution systems, controls, and new epoxy coatings throughout the space.
Services Performed
Albion Scaccia was selected as the General Contractor for the project. Because the building was fully occupied during construction, we phased in the implementation of the design. We put in place a three phased schedule to maintain classroom operations and to minimize disruptions. Our day to day onsite management included working closely with the instructions to schedule noisy and disruptive activates during non-instructional times. Each phase of work includes an equipment move out/in period, a demolition period and a building back period. We were responsible for working with the College to move all of the equipment and classroom materials of each phase, demolition of the existing CMU walls, electrical lighting, and HVAC systems, building back new CMU walls, plumbing and HVAC systems, and installing new electrical lighting and main distribution services. The finishes included replacing the existing acoustical ceiling systems with a painted exposed ceiling, new epoxy coating on the walls and floor and installing new instructural equipment. We were also responsible for all subcontractor managements, document control, cost management, schedule management, phase construction transitions, safety management, quality assurance, progress reporting and project closeout.
Performance
This project was completed on-budget and on-schedule. All expectations were met and was a very successful project.
